Many beetles are aposematic, with bright colors and patterns warning of their toxicity, while others are harmless Batesian mimics of such insects. Some, such as stag beetles, have a marked sexual dimorphism, the males possessing enormously enlarged mandibles which they use to fight other males. Beetles are endopterygotes, which means that they undergo complete metamorphosis, with a series of conspicuous and relatively abrupt changes in body structure between hatching and becoming adult after a relatively immobile pupal stage. The general anatomy of a beetle is quite uniform and typical of insects, although there are several examples of novelty, such as adaptations in water beetles which trap air bubbles under the elytra for use while diving. Some species are serious agricultural pests, such as the Colorado potato beetle, while others such as Coccinellidae (ladybirds or ladybugs) eat aphids, scale insects, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects that damage crops.īeetles typically have a particularly hard exoskeleton including the elytra, though some such as the rove beetles have very short elytra while blister beetles have softer elytra. Found in almost every habitat except the sea and the polar regions, they interact with their ecosystems in several ways: beetles often feed on plants and fungi, break down animal and plant debris, and eat other invertebrates. The Coleoptera, with about 400,000 described species, is the largest of all orders, constituting almost 40% of described insects and 25% of all known animal species new species are discovered frequently, with estimates suggesting that there are between 0.9 and 2.1 million total species. Their front pair of wings are hardened into wing-cases, elytra, distinguishing them from most other insects. This dataset contains more than15 million validated photos and is of great value for nature research.Clockwise from top left: female golden stag beetle ( Lamprima aurata), rhinoceros beetle ( Megasoma sp.), long nose weevil ( Rhinotia hemistictus), cowboy beetle ( Chondropyga dorsalis), and a species of Amblytelusīeetles are insects that form the order Coleoptera ( / k oʊ l iː ˈ ɒ p t ər ə/), in the superorder Endopterygota. The sightings can now be found on GBIF! With a dataset of more than 71 million observations, collected and validated by many volunteers, we have the 3rd largest dataset on GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). This way, you can plot observations on Google Earth. As a group admin, add a challenge and see who enters the most observations and species in the ranking.Ġ2-03-2023 - It is now possible to download your observations in KML format. We will track our progress here in this news section as soon as we have more news to share.Ġ4-04-2023 - Challenges have been added to the groups in ObsIdentify. Because of the amount of work involved, this will go in steps. Our developers have been working very hard on our complex databases, and we can now share that all observations from the Netherlands and Belgium will be added to later this year. Open the app to see how many stars you already have!Īnnouncement: all observations on Ġ6-04-2023 - Currently, all observations made in the Netherlands and Belgium are separated from. See if one area is near you in the special category.Ġ1-05-2023 - We have published a badge for fish in ObsIdentify. 15-05-2023 - On May 21st we celebrate Natura 20 with a bunch of BioBlitzes across the whole of Europe.
